How to Choose a Havdalah Set

What you need for Havdalah, what our sets include, 925 silver-plated or gold-plated, and the right set for a gift.

We make Havdalah sets by hand in our family studio in Israel. This guide explains what Havdalah needs and how to choose a set that will last.

The short answer

  • Havdalah needs a cup of wine, fragrant spices and a candle with more than one wick.
  • Our sets bring them together: a cup, a spice box and a candle holder on a matching tray.
  • 925 silver plating gives a bright, classic look and gold plating a warmer one. Both are washed by hand.
  • Pick a color that matches your candlesticks or Kiddush cup if you want the Shabbat table to read as one set.
  • A Havdalah set is a lasting gift for a wedding, a new home or a bar or bat mitzvah.

What is Havdalah?

Havdalah, meaning separation, is the short ceremony that ends Shabbat on Saturday night, after three stars appear. Blessings are said over wine, over fragrant spices and over the light of a candle with more than one wick, and the candle is then put out in the wine.

Any cup, spice holder and candle holder will do, but a matching set keeps everything together and ready on Saturday night.

What is in our Havdalah sets?

Each set has four pieces: a stemmed cup for the wine, a lidded spice box with holes to let the scent through, a holder for the Havdalah candle, and a tray that holds them together.

The glass parts are shaped and colored by hand, so every set differs a little from the photos.

925 silver-plated or gold-plated?

Our 925 silver-plated sets come in black, blue, white and orange glass, and the gold-plated sets in black, blue, white, orange and red.

Wash each piece by hand and dry the plating with a soft cloth. Let candle wax harden before you lift it off, and avoid liquid silver polish, which wears the plating.

Matching your Shabbat table

We make candlesticks, Kiddush cups and trays in many of the same colors and finishes, so a blue 925 silver-plated Havdalah set can sit beside blue 925 silver-plated candlesticks and a matching Kiddush cup.

Havdalah Set Questions

What do you need for Havdalah?

A cup of wine or grape juice, fragrant spices and a candle with more than one wick, usually braided. A Havdalah set holds all three.

When is Havdalah said?

On Saturday night, after Shabbat ends with the appearance of three stars. Jewish calendars list the exact time for each city.

Are the 925 silver-plated sets solid silver?

No. They are handmade glass finished with 925 silver plating, which gives the look of silver at a lower price than solid silver.

Can a Havdalah set go in the dishwasher?

No. Wash each piece by hand and dry the plating with a soft cloth, without liquid silver polish.

How long does a handmade Havdalah set take to arrive?

Each set is made to order. Allow up to 14 business days in the studio, then delivery. Shipping is ₪35 within Israel and $45 worldwide. Before a holiday, order a few weeks early.

Can I collect a Havdalah set in person?

Yes. In Israel you can choose collection from our gallery in Karnei Shomron at checkout, with no shipping charge.
