How to Choose Shabbat Candlesticks

How many candles, which height, 925 silver-plated, gold-plated or artisanal glass, and the right pair for a gift.

We make Shabbat candlesticks by hand in our family studio in Israel. Here is what to think about before you choose a pair.

The short answer

  • Most families light two candles on Friday night, so candlesticks are sold as a pair. Some add a candle for each child.
  • Choose the height by your table: a tall pair (23-25 cm) makes a centerpiece, a shorter pair (14-22 cm) suits a smaller table or a shelf.
  • 925 silver plating gives a bright, classic look and gold plating a warmer one. Artisanal pairs are all glass and put the glass itself first.
  • A matching tray catches dripping wax and protects the tablecloth.
  • Candlesticks are a classic wedding and new-home gift.

How many candles do you light?

The custom is to light at least two candles on Friday night, for the two words of the commandment: zachor and shamor, remember and keep the Shabbat. That is why our candlesticks are sold as a pair.

Many families add a candle for each child, and some light extra candles on holidays. If you need more than two holders, you can combine pairs in the same color and finish.

Which height?

Our 925 silver-plated and gold-plated pairs come in three heights:

SizeHeightBest for
S14-18 cmA smaller table or a shelf
M19-22 cmA smaller table, with a little more height
L23-25 cmThe centerpiece of the Shabbat table

Our artisanal glass pairs each come in one size. The double-sided white and blue pair, for example, stands 24 cm high.

Remember that the candles add height too. Under a low lamp or shelf, a shorter pair is the safer choice.

925 silver-plated, gold-plated or artisanal glass?

Our plated candlesticks are hand-shaped glass finished with 925 silver plating or gold plating. The 925 silver-plated pairs come in white, red, blue, green, black, blue-green and earth tones, and the gold-plated pairs in blue, blue-green, red, orange, earth, black and green.

Our artisanal pairs are all glass, without plating: Murano-style glass, stripes, dots, clear round and rectangular shapes, and a double-sided white and blue pair, each made with our family's traditional method.

Treat the plating gently. Let the wax harden, lift it off by hand and wipe the candlesticks with a soft cloth. Do not scrape the plating or use liquid silver polish.

Do you need a tray?

A tray under the candlesticks catches dripping wax, protects the tablecloth and frames the pair as one piece on the table. Our glass trays come in most of the same colors and finishes as the plated candlesticks, so you can match them.

Candlestick Questions

How many candles do Shabbat candlesticks hold?

Each candlestick holds one candle, and they are sold as a pair because the custom is to light at least two candles. Families who light more add further pairs.

What height should Shabbat candlesticks be?

It depends on the table. Our plated pairs come in S (14-18 cm), M (19-22 cm) and L (23-25 cm). The L pair makes a centerpiece, while S and M suit a smaller table or a shelf.

Are 925 silver-plated candlesticks solid silver?

No. They are handmade glass finished with 925 silver plating, which gives the look of silver at a lower price than solid silver.

How do I remove wax from glass candlesticks?

Let the wax harden, then lift it off gently by hand and wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Do not scrape the plating, put the candlesticks in the dishwasher or use liquid silver polish.

How long do handmade candlesticks take to arrive?

Each pair is made to order. Allow up to 14 business days in the studio, then delivery. Shipping is ₪35 within Israel and $45 worldwide. Before a holiday, order a few weeks early.

Can I collect candlesticks in person?

Yes. In Israel you can choose collection from our gallery in Karnei Shomron at checkout, with no shipping charge.
